What to Know The San José Estuary is a protected natural wetland where the freshwater of the San José River meets the Sea of Cortez, creating a lush habitat in the desert landscape. It’s one of Los Cabos’ best places to see birds and wildlife up close, with more than 200 species recorded here. Trails and observation points let you explore quietly, and there are almost no facilities, so plan to bring water and sun protection. It’s free to visit on your own, and some guided cultural or bird-watching tours include insights into local ecology. What to Do The estuary is a bird-watcher’s paradise, with herons, egrets, pelicans, ospreys, and many migratory species found in the reserve. Walking paths and boardwalks wind through reeds and marshes, offering peaceful spots to observe nature and take photos. Binoculars bring wildlife into crisp view, especially early or late in the day.
